McMaster University is implementing a 120-day expiration policy for all Teams Chat messages on January 15th, 2025. However, this change will not affect files shared within a Teams chat — these documents will be retained.  

Microsoft has imposed storage limits on higher education institutions to improve security and minimize the environmental impact of unused data. McMaster is implementing these changes to align with Microsoft's policies and avoid additional costs. 

In response to this change, and to promote responsible storage practices, McMaster University is implementing the key change that will impact all students, faculty, staff, and retirees.
